Ash Tree of no Ash Tree?

I have a fairly large piece of property between myself/neighbor that is constantly moist. A local agent said it's ground water seeping from other parts of the county and put me in touch with a riparian water specialist (have creek running through back of property as well) for plants/trees suggestions. Riparian water specialist said I can plant something big like an elm or sycamore and some under story trees/shrubs/perennials and gave other plant suggestions for the site.

Already in the general area are: an oak, a red maple, a black willow, a tiny river birch and a crepe myrtle located further up the hill. I picked up two 8ft tall red buds a mountain laurel and someone gave me an 12ft tall eastern ash. Also new neighbor dumped a dogwood tree back there as well. I am wondering if I should dig up the ash and replace it with another canopy tree? I have LOADS of birds around so I'd like to give them something beneficial. Is just a matter of time before something attacks the ash I've planted? BTW, I live near Richmond VA, the site is full sun, heavy clay and generally always moist. My goal is to naturalize/mulch the entire area so I don't have to mess with it in the future ~ thoughts?
