Aquilegia canadensis was eaten last night

Yesterday one of my plants was all leafed out finally and today it is gone....eaten right down to the soil level and there is not a trace of a leaf or stem anywhere. Does anyone know what could have eaten it? I don't think it was deer as a deer would have broken the stems on the plant infront to reach it. A few weeks ago just as my helleborus was beginning to put on new growth something chomped off all the green stems of that too. That has since come back and is blooming but there are a lot of angled stems. I am in western NY state outside Niagara Falls
