New ceanothus 'ray hartman' looks bad

Well, like dwichman (post below), I recently planted a 5 gallon ceanothus, and it looks bad after 3 weeks. Mine is a Ray Hartman ... I got it at Home Depot, where I think they had been watering it daily, but it looked very healthy. It was pretty rootbound, so I had to tear off a fair amount of tiny roots that were matted around the outside of the root ball. Planted it and left it alone, but after several days it was drooping terribly so I gave it some water. Same thing several days later. It stopped drooping, so I stopped watering, but now the leaves are turning yellow and dropping.

Soil here is moderately clay, and should be good and wet from a very wet rainy season. Partial sun. Temps have been max 60, min 40.

Thanks to any experienced ceanothus growers who can advise what (if anything) to do.
