Bare root Crataegus saplings

Dear all-knowing Natives forum,

Just about everything I know about landscaping with native plants I learned from this forum, so I'm confident that there is enough combined experience out there to teach me what to do once again:

Someone on this forum VERY kindly gave me 2 bare root Crataegus saplings. Because they arrived very early one morning (right before I had to leave for work, dressed in my office clothes, etc.) and I didn't want them to have to sit in a box all day, I popped them into pots with some purchased organic garden soil that I had on hand. That was 2 days ago. I've kept the soil damp.

I don't know whether to plant my saplings now or pot them until autumn, when they've developed a little bit of a root system. I've never had a bare root plant before.

What do you all think? Should I plant them now or wait?
