Synonym(s): lesser Celandine Lesser celandine is a short (up to 12 inches) herbaceous perennial that invades forests throughout the East, Midwest and Pacific Northwest regions of the United States. The basal leaves are dark green, shiny, and kidney- to heart-shaped. Flowers are showy, bright yellow, with 8 petals. It emerges very early in the spring with infestations often creating a green blanket along the forest floor. Lesser celandine invades moist forested floodplains. It is a spring ephemeral and grows vigorously, creating dense mats that exclude all other vegetation. It is a threat particularly to the native forest spring ephemerals that have to compete for light and space with this invasive. Lesser celandine is native to Europe and was first introduced into the United States as an ornamental. It is currently sold and widely planted as an ornamental.

It just dawned on me that you may have been at the EARTH DAY celebration at World's Fair Park last April. There were folks there with native plants, farm critters and bee keepers. There were numerous native plant nurseries selling plants and paraphenalia (gardening type). You might do an Internet search to see if Knoxville has put up an Earth Day site yet this year. Or just be on the lookout in late April. It usually happens around the 20th of April, whatever falls on the weekend. ALSO, Ijams (pronounced like Iams) Nature Center has a big native plant sale every year around autumn. They may have a list of the local Native nursery folk. AND Todd Whitcher, who works at Ijams, has a nursery in Park Ridge, right next to Fourth and Gill area. You may be able to reach him and find out where and when local sales are going on.
