flowers all year?

I am wanting more flowers in the spring, not just daffodils, snow drops, and hyacynths, and crocus. i want more variety. also is there anything that will bloom in the winter? besides hellebore? also, i dont want any plants that i will need to really bring inside or something. i am looking for things that can survive by themselves without much help, and ones that can survive frost and snow.

None of the plants you mentioned are native to North America. Are you sure you put this in the right forum?

Excellent message on the benefits of worms. I take this idea to the logical conclusion and, instead of creating a worm bin, buying worms, feeding them regularly, harvesting castings, and distributing castings, I create worm environments outside on the ground, which I plant directly into. I use the "lasagna bed" building method, whereby I first layer with newspaper to keep weeds out, then add several layers of worm food and plant into soil pockets. Potatoes can be "planted" by laying them directly on the newpaper and covering with the layers of worm food. For worm food I layer leaves (they do not need to be shredded), compost, coffee grounds (I get a ton for free from Starbucks), twigs, and anything that could be composted until I have a good pile or run out of ingredients. This year I planted potatoes under one of my lasagna beds and by harvest time all of the ingredients were gone; entirely eaten by the worms in the soil. I ended up with 6 inches of worm castings, this bed is looking pretty awesome for next year. Cheers!

Some citrus varieties exhibit what is known as alternate bearing, a characteristic shared by many nut and fruit trees. Professional growers get around it by careful pruning management and fruit removal, mostly. IF all other conditions are just the same as previous seasons, then that's probably what is going on. However, if the plant needs to be re-potted or root pruned, or if other environmental issues have changed, then it could be a variety of things.

Please, please do post pix of cherub once it colors up. Mine grew well from the cutting I got last fall but I had to bring it in before it bloomed and the young buds fell before developing. I'll really be interested to see it. My Peach Versi didn't bloom either but if its like mine and blooms it may 'almost' run you out of the house...one of my favs for perfume. LOL! GGG, I would think something was wrong if you didn't have kelly green parsley mixed with bright orange pansies. : ) I love, love, love calendula! I haven't seen the Orange Prince, but will look it up. Your combo does sound spectacular! Until recently I had those dark purple, almost black, pansies growing around my broccoli. The gray-green of the broccoli leaves was a nice contrast to the deeper color of the pansies. But now the broccoli leaves have turned really dark - pretty, but too dark with the pansies so I moved the pansies. They are now in the birdbath in front of the porch. And last summer I had my Bells of Ireland growing next to cinnamon basil. I loved the color of the basil leaves - almost a burgundy - with the soft, minty green of the bells. I have bells popping up all over that potager bed, so I should be able to repeat the combo if my basil comes back. It appears to be alive, so we'll see. Diana

If you're into natives, you might look at: http://www.laspilitas.com/garden/hummingbird.html which would keep hummingbirds happy all year.

Might try the perennials forum. Can't think of any natives that flower all year. When I want to have something blooming for most of the summer I will go with annuals like petunias. Perennials typically flower during only a portion of the growing season, although some will keep going for several weeks.

For more spring flowers look to so-called spring ephemerals. Virginia bluebells are commonly offered for sale but other natives, like trilliums, are harder to find and may be dug from the wild.

um, i know flowers cant bloom all year. i just meant that i want flowers in the winter and early spring, not just the summer.

Right now I have Woodland Phlox blooming in shade and creeping phlox in the sun. Both bloom for about a month in the spring and come back every year. I'm in zone 6 though. Since you're in zone 8, I suggest that you check to see if Gardenweb has a regional forum for your state or check the Southern Gardening forum. I think that would be the most helpful. What state are you in? Try starting a new thread there asking for something like "Winter and Spring Blooming Perennials". Hope that helps.
