Growing an Oak Tree

While hiking in October, I picked up a huge acorn, which I believe was from a red oak. I sprouted it in water on October 5 and then planted it in a planter on October 10. (I had read that a red oak first puts out a deep taproot, and I thought that the first sprout was a root and planted it down. So perhaps I planted the acorn upside down.)

Anyway, a double shoot finally breached the surface and produced five nice leaves, but then the plant languished throughout the winter, not growing any. Then it produced another shoot on which only one leaf grew. It has now produced another shoot with another three leaves.

My goal is to grow it until it's 2' or 3' tall, then plant it outside. But I expected it to get taller, to have the stalk become a trunk, and so far it's not doing much of anything. I just have three or four very short shoots with a few leaves on them. What's the problem? Does it need much more sun? Does it need a larger pot?
