Which critter?!....

would have bitten the leaves off ginseng and bloodroot?

There are millions of bloodroots in this forest but I bought some ginseng rootstock and planted it last spring. I have deer, prob rabbits, though I don't ever see them, and def. squirrels. I have never seen a bloodroot w/its leaves nipped off (and eaten) but the bloodroot and ginseng adjacent to it both had their leaves removed and eaten. I can't believe deer would do this? They never (usually) touch bloodroot! Would this kill the ginseng? Or are the roots ok and it will come up next spring? One stalk was left uneaten...I am putting a cage over it!!!

should not kill it, occasionally it happens in nature that a plant gets stomped on or broken off, it comes back the next year.

Do you have groundhogs around? The ones in my yard (which we are trying valiantly to get rid of) ate my native columbines down to little green sticks. Bummer.

A gopher finished off one of my plants yesterday, plant just sunk down in the hole. I put the hose down the hole and flushed him out. My Corgi was chasing him when I went in the house, not wanting to see her kill him. I've never had a gopher bother the tomatoe plants before. Good luck with whatever is getting yours.

Is it so wet because of a heavy storm? If so the tomato plant could just have broken in the wind since it wasn't staked or anything. The strip left attached would indicate wind breaking to me. The bean damage is minor and could also be storm damage or possibly slugs or beetles or any number of other things that only your exploration will ID. But if no further damage they should recover fine. Something clearly ate the berries and curiously without breaking any stems it appears or leaving any remains. IME that usually requires a full berry plucking motion just as people would use to pick them. So unless your had a 2 legged visitor I'd consider big birds too. Tomato plants and beans could sure use some mulching and stakes or cages for the tomato plants. Don't get too discouraged. It happens to all of us and surprisingly most things recover. Oh, if only!! I have benefited from a few squirrel re-plantings of neighbours bulbs, but so have my neighbours received some of mine... I'd be thrilled if we could find a way to indoctrinate all squirreldom that the next tulip will not taste any better than the last one... if only they would eat 3 instead of nipping the buds of flowers off of dozens and dozens of them! I may try putting water out for them this spring, to test whether or not they are after the nectar/liquid at the base of the tulip bloom. With my luck they'll tell all their cousins about the water,,,,

Thank-you both for your input! I kind of figured the roots were still intact but I was hoping it might multiply this year...no hope of that! No groundhogs that I have seen....but someone bit the head and flower bud off my trillium too :( AND I just put out 4 clumps of wintersown columbine so it better not touch them or else!!! I'm very sorry to hear about your columbines!
