Wild ramps or leeks

Anyone know their preferred habitat? When to hunt for them? Is is the same time as morels?

Hunt for them? Where ... on your property? I imagine there are internet articles on harvest ramps.

Scot, I laughed out loud when I saw your posting. Not too many people outside of WV even know what a ramp is. Where are you? My whole hillside is covered with them. We talked about some fried potatoes and ramps this weekend..... But they will be fried outside on the grill. ;) Chris

Ramps do not cultivate well is my understanding but do the best grown in the wild for better strength and flavor. They use to say that was why they have never been produced commercially. Now I do know they did try ginseng commercially. I sure do miss fried potatoes with ramps and ramp burgers but no longer in in or near West Virgina where they use to have ramp festivals and you could buy bags full alongside the roads. They were talking about stopping those festivals as they thought it might destroy the complete species of plant. If you eat a ramp raw when you walk into any room all those there could smell your breath but once cooked it never was that bad, but such a wonderful flavor when used in cooking.

Ramp make the very best leek soup. You need only a cupful of the cleaned leeks. The only problem growing them is they like wet soil and somewhat shady conditions. Easy to find near a creek-bank in the woods. Wish I had some now. Here in zone 5 they are about 3 weeks early.

Beckly West VA. has a ramp festival every year. I do know you cook them out side. and from what I have seen a good time is had by all. Most I have seen are wild and thrive well once established. good luck

I've just discovered that I have wild leeks growing on my property. I've been here eight years and just now learned what it was. (I posted on "name that plant".)The confusing part of it is that by the time the flower scapes show up, the leaves are gone, so I never put the two together as one plant. It's interesting to know that people go "hunting" for them, and I have them for free. But I've never tried one...not sure I want to.
