Mystery Plant

Seen in dry woodland, May 10, southeast Michigan, sorry - no picture. Several examples, about 2' tall, had a small, globular shaped flower cluster on a leafless stem coming off the main stalk, like ginseng family. The leaves were in threes, on three equal branches coming from the main stalk at the same place, like blue cohosh. The leaves had three leaflets at the tip, then five leaflets nearer the main stalk; the leaves were narrow triangular with toothed edges. The nearest I can get is sarsparilla, BUT the main stalks were uniformally purple, very smooth, and round in section. Any guesses? Regards, Peter.
