Large yellow lady's slipper

I found a thread on GardenWeb forums about places to buy yellow lady's slipper only 2 days ago and now I cannot find it. Does anyone know a garden plant supplier that sells yellow lady's slipper preferably Cypripedium calceolus? If so, please help. There was a beautiful grouping of lady's slippers at my grandmother's house and I'd rather buy some for my own garden than try to transplant them from her home... I don't want to disturb their environment! Please help!

Some of the links are dead, probably because they are for companies offering "rescues", which is a nice way of saying they bought land and dug up the orchids to sell. Others are reputable companies that offer Cypripediums grown from seed. You may have to wait awhile but laboratory propagated orchids will have the best chance of survival and do not impact wild populations.

I've been considering trying to grow this species in vitro. Will probably fail but might be fun to try.

I purchased all my ladyslippers from Vermont Ladyslipper Company.

They sell high-quality bare-root plants (though somewhat pricey, as are all lab-propagated ladyslippers) which are doing well in my garden. The cultural instructions they send with each order are an excellent resource for planting.

There's very little point in allowing the plants to produce seed pods, since the odds of getting volunteers in the garden are infinitessimal and they've only really been successfully artificially germinated using flasking techniques under lab conditions. Producing and ripening seeds uses a lot of energy that the plant could conserve and use toward building up the strength to flower in subsequent years. So, I'd suggest removing the seedpods before they develop... but I know it's tempting to leave 'em!

There are no other large clumps in the area but there are colonies of 3-5 plants scattered about. The leaves are large but they are not as easy to spot as I would think. There was an absolute riot of vegetation in the surrounding area , a protected humid hillside facing NE. There were also Showy Orchis blooming, Trout Lilies by the thousands (long done blooming), Mayapples, the white and the red Buckeyes, and too many other wild blooming plants to list. In nearby pine woods, the Pink Lady Slippers are going to town, with large blossoms, despite the severe drought we had last summer. Lots of colonies of them, if you where to look!! Hi terrestrial man! I don't think drainage is the problem, it's in the best area of our property soil-wise, 20 years of leaf mold. I think the real problem with my formosanum is that they were smallish to begin with. I do grow about 5 or 6 species of trilliums, and doesn't C. reginae need more chill than formosanum? We get in the mid to upper teens in winter, and about 90 nights below freezing every winter (I'm in a cold spot), plus our nights are in the low 50s or below year-round. Anyway, I love these terrestrial orchids, and would love to get some of the California natives going here, there's a Cal-native ladyslipper native to the county I live in (Sonoma). But, I've never found any sources for any of the California ones. --Ron

Has anything like shade, moisture, or neighboring plants changed? I have pink ladies slippers, and I've divided them early on when the first leaves show. I leave as much of the soil intact as possible, they seem soooo delicate! They haven't really reproduced themselves, they seem to take a long time to re-establish, and seem really fussy about where you put them. My best bet would be to mimic the original growing area as closely as possible, and keep them moist. Maybe you could add more soil/compost as a top dressing? Are they maybe depleting what they have? If you could keep them in the same spot and just give them more "food", as in natural soil/compost, I'm guessing natural loam, to avoid moving them unless really neccessary, try that first. I wish I could offer more!

Isn't calceolus the european yellow? Pubescens is the large native yellow, parviflorum the small native yellow.

Depends on your source. Some authorities regard our large yellow lady's slippers as C. calceolus var. pubescens and the smaller one as C. calceolus var. parviflorum.

The Flora of North America project views our species as C. parviflorum and recognizes three varieties: var. pubescens, var. parviflorum, and var. makasin.
