hardy orange needs help

we bought a beautiful hardy orange (flying dragon) treelast spring. it produced 2 "oranges" last summer. i did a lot of research and found that hardy oranges do fine in frozen temps and the horticulturist that we bought it from said that it would be able to survive north carolina winters. so we left it outside. winter came and went and now that spring is here the tree looks dead. i broke off a few small branches and noticed that the tree is VERY DRY.

how can we revive this beautiful tree? i am wondering if we should just prune off all the branches down to the trunk and let new growth grow. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
