Help with Clematis pseudoalpina

Hi. I hate to double-post but I've not received a response in my local forum, so here goes...

This is my original post(also linked below):

Can I grow this? I've noticed that I see wild clematis on my hikes above my neighborhood and am thinking of giving it a try.

My main questions are:

Is this something that will do well in my yard? I'm at 8250 elevation and usually see this up higher, starting at around 8500. I can put it in sun or shade or a little of both. I can plant it at the base of a ponderosa pine if that will make it happier but it would be an almost entirely shady area.

Can it grow in a normal flower bed or should I stick it where the soil has not been amended? I do amend my soil with compost but there is a ton of yard that I don't bother with. It is just too much work. So, I have tons of rocky 'local' dirt that I can plant in.

And, for those out there who know their taxonomy, I'm having trouble getting the name right. Is it Clematis pseudoalpina or Clematis columbiana?

The background, since not all of you live in my neck of the woods, is as follows.

I live in Colorado at 8250 elevation in a pine and aspen forest with lots of rocky dirt. Not as much clay as the lower and surrounding areas. We have different weather, depending on the year. It usually does nt go below -20F. It can be either hot and dry with strong winds or cool and damp due to rains. We have strong winds-80-100mph, every year.

When hiking just above town, at about 8500 feet, I see little clematis of unknown name. I assume they are 'Rocky Mountain Clematis' but am not sure of the binomial name.

I'd like to grow this in my yard but am not sure if it would be happy here. I'm very close to where it grows as a native but haven't seen it quite as low as my yard. Although I'd love to have it in my flower beds, I understand it might not be happy in soil and compost and might prefer the rest of my yard which is rocky and dry.

I'd love to know if anyone has an idea of how best to grow this.

why not try it? Many plants can be grown outside of their native range. For instance, almost all of the viorna group of Clematis native to the southeastern US can be grown in gardens as far north as New Hampshire and Canada.

I would look for the conditions where they grow nearest to you and try to mimic that.

The proper name is Clematis columbiana var. columbiana.

Thank you for your input!! I was thinking I should just give it a go. And, since most of my "soil" is similar to the stuff I see it growing in in the wild, I think I'll just try it in the un-amended soil. It looks happy where it is, in the shade, so I'll tuck it not far from the pines with the shade and see how that goes.

I thought that could be the correct name but wasn't really sure. Now maybe I can find some seeds or a plant!

Marketing a variety that will cover an area with 'wall of flowers' ... This fast-growing perennial vine will easily cover your garden wall or trellises for screening and privacy—or will cover the ground in border and rock gardens. Its lush leaves are a beautiful green palmate shape with a pinnate structure, arranged opposite of each other along the stems. As for its blooms, the richly purple 3" flowers contrast perfectly with its green foliage. While the petals can range in color from bright purple to almost black, the centers will always have a cream-colored "eye" of stamens. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil in full sunlight or partial shade, and can grow between 5-10' tall! Clematis 'Etoile Violette' .. Sam's advice is good. I've grown scores of clematis over the years, including boxed or bagged clem roots that are available almost everywhere in early spring. In fact, some of my most desirable and difficult to find clems have been obtained this way! IME, these little starts are too small and too vulnerable to be planted out directly and should be grown on in pots until they are of adequate size and root development. If I do purchase clems in this manner I will grow them on until the root system fills a nursery 1G pot. And then plant them into the ground in fall or hold over until the next spring if not quite to that stage. And I do the same with any small potted clems - the 2.5 or 4" pots. In my climate, cold is not a concern with these potted up starts so they are outside from the start.....but just not in the ground :-) In climates that still have the potential for some cold weather, I would wait until temps are consistently above freezing at night, then gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions. The roots in pots will be fine........it is the tender top growth that could be damaged and that is what needs to be hardened off. And if they have top growth already - which it sounds like they do - light is essential!! Continuing to keep them in the dark will result in anemic, weak growth that will put your new vines off to a poor start.

The problem with ken's suggestion is that a lot of that deadwood is attached to live growth. And at the wrong end..... Cutting back from what appears to be dead growth will typically result in removing a significant portion of live growth as well. But not to worry!! You can cut it back now, And you can start at either end :-) Pruning a clematis vine outside of pruning group instructions or at the 'wrong' time will rarely cause anything other than a delayed bloom cycle. Yours is most likely a pruning group 2 vine, so one that flowers first on last seasons' growth then usually again later on the current season's. You can easily find instructions online for pruning these clems as well as the other groups but I prefer to simplify things. I have grown too many clematis over the years to fuss about with pruning groups and which ones belong where that I now just lump them into a 'prune' or 'don't prune' grouping. The 'don't prune' are any evergreen or winter/early spring flowering vines. These bloom on old growth and typically bloom before the end of May so pruning will remove any potential for flowering....unless done immediately after flowering if needed to control size. All the rest I prune down to the second or third set of buds from the base in early spring - a hard prune like is suggested for pruning group 3's. In colder zones, the type 2's are often knocked back to the roots by winter anyway so a hard pruning is not much different. All it does is delay the start of the bloom cycle of these slightly....a few weeks to a month at most. When I worked for a large wholesale clematis grower, the vines for sale (1G or larger containers) would get cut back by the staff routinely to keep them from getting all tangled together. It never bothered them at all and they just continued to push out new growth and flowers. Not sure why the suggestion to visit the Perennials forum. If you want to discuss clematis, visit the Clematis or the Vines forums. But if you want to discuss herbaceous perennials that would be an appropriate venue :-)

I have heard of people pruning after the first bloom and getting another flush of growth and bloom for Type 2 or 3 clematis. Others just prune once per year in Fall or early Spring.
