Jack in the Pulpit question

Someone just gave me a few Jack in the Pulpit plants and bulbs. I've always wanted one of these plants, but I don't know much about them. I always think of them as shade loving plants, but my property has no shade at all yet, so I was wondering if I could plant them in full sun and expect them to survive.

Mine not only grow in shade, they need moist earth. I have mine in the woods and in my moss garden. If you have a corner of the house that is mossy, it might be a nice spot for them.

If you look at your yard, try to find a place that gets afternoon shade, perhaps because of the way a young tree or large shrub blocks the sun, that would be preferred. As the above poster said, moisture is appreciated, perhaps even the area where the a/c unit spills condensation. Good enough moisture will even help cope with a sunnier than usual location.

Peaches, yes, but don't give up on them as they can be a little slow. Since it's into Feb and not December, you might want to soak overnight before WS - that's what I do with mine in this mild cool Z8

I planted a few Jack in the Pulpit seeds this spring, including three in a pot. They've all gone dormant, which I'm guessing is normal since they all did it at the same time. I dug up the bulbs in the pot just to have a look: I understand it will take several years for them to bloom, but for the ones in the pot, I was wondering if I could speed things along by putting them in the fridge for an artificial winter, and maybe getting two growing cycles per year. If so, my two questions are: 1) How long would the artificial winter have to be at refrigerator temperature? 2) Would I have to give them supplemental light this fall/winter to grow them inside, so they perceive the daylength as longer? I'm in zone 6, Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, which is where the seeds were gathered. This message is also posted at the Woodland forum. Alex

Jacks are pretty hearty. They are ephemeral and may just go dormant due to the disturbance. They may do nothing this year... but should come back just fine next year. They like moisture, rich soil, leaf mulch and shade.

I don't know. The jacks by me seem to move around in an apparently random fashion. That doesn't make sense so I am probably missing something. Sometimes I find them in new locations and sometimes they seem to go missing after reappearing in the same spot for two or more years in a row. Hopefully someone more expert than me answers your question. One area where I had them several years in a row was fairly dry.

That's going to be pretty tough for me. Can I grow them indoors in pots till I can create some shade?

I wouldnt worry to much, I actually had one in my garden and it got quite a bit of sun and got HUGE!!. they are pretty hardy as long as you Keep it well watered. Im in zone 5/6 NE pa. We also have them in the woods. I live in the country and have seen them grow in the sunny spots in the woods(clearings). This particular Jack was in a wet spot. Hubby forgot it was there in the winter and put something on top of it. I was so mad!
You might want to make a bog garden for it, it can add some other plants that like boggy soil.
