Nine foot Euphorbia fell over! How do I keep it up?
Comments (23)Most importantly is the plant inside against the wall all the time? This Euphorbia Ammak is a large growing tree and needs bright sunlight to maintain itself. Soil looks to be dry but they should be in a gritter mix to increase drainage. Is the brown spots mussy or soft, and/or smells funny. It is possible that it is still okay. Needs better living conditions. Turning brown or black is sometimes part of growing this white ammak. If you must cut, Use a sharp knife and cut across where there is no rot and only good stem. Have a spray bottle of cold water to spray the white latex sap. Sap is toxic and a skin irritant and wash right after cutting it. If you get any in your eyes, wash out with tons of water then go to the hospital for treatment. Let the cut heal and dry for a few days before planting in pure grit or perlite. It takes almost a year for new roots to form. No water can be taken up till it grows new roots. Comments (4)I had several fall over this past summer and fall, as a result of voles eating the base of the plant under ground. The last few years, moles have been really bad in my yard, apparently drawn to earthworms that love my lush composty garden soil. Then the voles follow them in and eat many of my plants from the roots up. They especially love lariope. This is the first year they've started on the bananas though. This means war against the little rats! You can easily tell if this is your problem by inspecting the base of the plant--you can't tell from above the ground, but lay the plant over and look underneath. A warning sign would be tunnels hollowing out the ground around the base....See Moredead leaves never fell of my Japanese maple. Should I remove?
Comments (9)I'm in zone 6 for those who wondered... I'd never had issues with my potted maples before...and this was my first year that I even wrapped the pot with leaves, bubble wrap and burlap for the winter months. Guess that may not have been enough with this prolonged winter.... ;-( Also my plant is on an (elevated) balcony which only exacerbates any cold conditions... There's no last ditch effort I could try...maybe like 'pruning' all the branches just above a 'knob', to see if it stimulates some new growth? I suppose I could also try to scrape the bark a bit and see if I see any green underneath? And if I WERE to see green underneath, but yet still no new buds, then would conclusion could be made then? Comments (7)Pot as stupidlazydog suggested. Sifted perlite or pumice should be added to C&S soil, in generous amounts. Do not keep succulents in water...You can cut off inflorescence or keep it. If you worry about any discoloration, pls. post photo. Otherwise, we are just guessing....See Morefour (9B near 9A)
