A tree fungus

This pretty thing is growing on an oak tree. Looks delicious. Can I eat it?

Definitely not a plant. Looks like Laetiporus sulphureus, the sulphur shelf mushroom. Indicative of at least some degree of heart rot, although not the cause of same.
