some sort of locust?

There are shrubs growing along an expressway I travel(rte 33 in Buffalo) that has these shrubs I am interested in that are growing wild along the side in rock/rocky area. They have multiple stalks, not woody looking, with black locust like leaves. They have no flower or seeds at all like black locust or a Sumac though. The leaves are alternate pinnately compound and oval but a more elongated oval than a black locust leaf. They are very tropical looking. I am sorry I have no picture. For anyone in my area, I see a lot on the 33 west between where Burgard HS is and the 198 on ramp.

Any one with an idea?

Woody plants that have been mowed or cut down may send up multiple shoots that are not yet woody. This may give the plant a much different look than it would normally have and along roads are a perfect place to see that "mowed effect."

I too live in Western NY (Finger Lakes/Rochester area), locust trees are a very common sight along roadways and expressways. There are some road sections that are very perfumed each year (and so a favorite of mine) from all the blooming locust - which was in bloom in the last 2 weeks. Without a picture, I'd suspect a locust. But there are more tree-knowledgeable regulars here who might have other suggestions.

Embothrium. Yes you are correct. It appears to be a flat fan shape, but the 3rd, 4th leaves, etc do actually rotate slightly from the plane. A few more leaves would have made it more obvious. Hi Ken. Good to see you are still your old self. After buying the property and doing bits, I decided I needed to re-stock the travel fund, so hopefully next year. The Cornish Hedge is done and the plants are slowly doing their thing. Very slow growth this year due to the drought and lovely Australian type temperatures. Several of the plants in the mixed hedge are very confused. Everything put on leaves, then decided to call it a day and just stopped growing. One of the witchhazel (Hamamelis mollis) has decided to come into flower while still fully leafed out. The hollies have now decided to start growing, with the male and 1 female putting on loads of flowers.
