btw, I know somewhere else here there is a forum for Plant ID help, but I couldn't find it. I looked under "plant, ID, Mystery" etc. What is it filed as...anybody know? Sorta ironic that that category has to be so hard to find. I mean if you don't know the exact name of it, how on earth would you even know it exists?

Anyway, I recently planted the following seeds into one large planter and now have some seedlings. I'm curious which seeds "took". Any ideas?

The seedling with the dissected leaves may be a cosmos. The small woody seedling may be a cherry of some kind. Both are hard for me to positively ID at this young stage. Did you plant either of those?

Saintpfla, sorry for the delayed response. I lost track of this thread and ran acrossed it looking for something else. I am not good at looking at pics for id's. To me it doesn't look the same but I could be wrong. On the swamp bay, if you break the leaf apart, it smells alot like bay leaf. The new leaves are soft and fuzzy and the old leaves are not. The new leaves on your pic look the same as the older ones. The flower is so very small it is hard to tell when it is open and the flower is greenish. I don't remember a smell to the flower.

This is not an Eastern Lubber. It is Schistocerca obscura (Fabricius). This species belongs to a group of especially strong fliers called "bird" grasshoppers. Its taste for certain valuable ornamental plants such as hibiscus often brings it into conflict with humans . Hello Ken, Yes, I like to sterilize potting-mixes too. I make my own blend. Mostly peat, harvested sand and some biochar and (sorry) "twist of lime". The sand is important as it gives good drainage AND weight to the pot. Tiffany and Gardengal, I know IDing plants can difficult and posting pictures are often the simplest way to ID plants. (I guess I posted the picture twice.) I am interested in what exactly this plant is and any available on-line plant ID sites. Thank you! Doug

Thanks for your reply. I'm awfully sorry...I meant to include the list of what I'd planted, and then totally neglected to! Well...you're absolutely right on the cosmos...I DID sow some of that.

The other seeds I sowed...I don't have the list handy..but if memory serves me it was:

common milkweed
echinops retro
northern sea oats/chasmanthium latifolium
cleome

...and the cosmos.
