You know what, I thought buttercup too... I believe that they irritate the skin. Does this plant?

I've found some other images that look about just like the photo you provided that are supposedly buttercups... I'm pretty sure that it's a match. ;)

To me, it looks like Trollius (globeflower), based on the spiky things that stick up from the center of the flower.

How large are the flowers? Ranunculus repens flowers would be 1/2 to 3/4 inch across, while Trollius flowers are much larger -- 1 to 2 inches across.

Here's the pic so all can see it. Hmmmm..... well I'm sticking with Ranunculus.... the morphology changes a lot depending on where it is so that helps my case ;o)

In a wet spot in my backyard they invade the lawn and will get 2' high if I let them.

is this an ornamental or was it found in the wild? If found in the wild was it in a wet place? What state do you live in? Either way, its not common buttercup which has shiny inner petals appearing to be "buttered".

I think Janet is right. Trollius, with wide petal-like sepals and narrow petals.

I don't think it's swamp buttercup. Looks different and swamp buttercup blooms much earlier - March if I remember.

Looks like Trollius aka Globe Flower to me too. Closely related to ranunculus flower and in the Ranunculaceae family.
