Right on, thanks everyone! This a new species to me. Parsley hawthorn is the only non thorny hawthorn I remember learning about that is native to the area. I have seen references already on the similarity between the two species. Will have to collect some fruit later and grow some for my own woods. Does the fruit ripen in early fall? Hmmm...maybe...but I am all but positive these do not flower or fruit, and they don't look as vigorous as in the Duke pictures. They are prolific, though...plenty of seedlings/saplings and some 8-9' trees like this one. More time needed for it to leaf out, perhaps?

Looks like Lily of the Valley but it's not blooming. That's a low light plant but I think the blooms need a little light at least.

Hi You're a brave man trying to identify these plants lol I grow Martinsii,uncinta and euryops on purpose and a whole jungle of things that come up with it. The most interesting is the driftwood that is kept constantly moist the selaginellas will attach but not nearly as well as the ferns and that stuff that looks like green velvet, i find the selaginellas will change habits and colors depending on the growing conditions and temps also ,I suspect. Martinsii in particular will range from almost a bronze color through greens and even blue looking much like incinta in the shade. You'd think they were different species Whatever they call them they are one of my favorite plants!! My "moss" garden is not quite a year old and it's already fantastic to look at though I can see that ferns are going to be a big problem. gary
