This was difficult ... Like an L. principis, but shorter tubercles and almost no spines sounds like Ariocarpus. The reference to a a bright green koosh ball puzzles me. I thought about Mammillaria luethyi, but it is almost black. Which one of Ariocarpus and M. luethyi does "your" plant resemble most, and how does it differ from them?

Wait until the fronds unfurl and spores develop. then a fern id book should help you identify them. I can tell many of them when they are unfurling in the spring, but I am not aware of any book or web site such as you want

Hour.. yuck. ya, not really worth the gas right now. by the way.. some phones have features that you can turn off the shutter noise and it will look like you just using your phone.. with no noise who knows.. he he... not to mention accidents happen. I have tons of pics of the inside of my purse, and hubby has taken plenty of the jeep door from seat belt hitting the phone. ROFL! hint.. if your ever there again. :) whatever you decide..
