Anita, where in NY are you? If you want to see my pathetic attempts to restore some land in White Plains and maybe swipe a sample or two let me know.

I just sent you an email via Garden Web. For some reason I couldn't get it to go straight through from my regular email. Let me know if you get the email or not. Oohing and aahing is fine but you might also recoil in horror when you see all the invasives I am trying to eradicate. If you look at some of the neighboring properties and a nearby county park, however, you will see a difference.

Butternut (Juglans cinera) and Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) are both native trees in NY, and what you've got is probably one of them. They both have alternate leaves, don't know what ID page you're reading. I live in northern NJ and we have both here, although Butternuts are considerably less common than walnuts. I find them difficult to tell apart, unless you have the fruit; Black Walnuts are round, Butternuts are obviously oblong. There are also some other differences in the buds, twig pith, etc. One interesting thing is that if you cut the twig longways the soft inner pith is chambered rather than solid; which is a good ID feature. If there's a nut tree growing across the street, probably what you have is the same thing. I think the squirrels bury the nuts. Anita55, I don't think Pkguy saw your post, but I did! I'm scouring the threads for first sightings--just doing a search on the word "first" inside each thread that has recent posts in the past day or so. It's tedious, and you're right, it would be so much easier if people would post their own sightings to the First Sightings thread. It's going to be quite a bit of work compiling it into something that makes sense. It's been a little weird this year with that very early warmup and then the big freeze in early April. I don't know how typical these results will be, but it will show that people can wait quite a while after the first sightings to see their firsts. I'm hoping it will serve as something we can refer to in the future--So and so waited for 3 weeks, and still got her hummingbirds back. It can be a reality check for everyone worrying about all those dots around them. I kind of wish there were another map that was a first AVERAGE sighting date--just take everyone's first sightings in an area and average them together. That would be a much better predictor of when you'd be likely to see your first. Anyway, thanks for the note to Pkguy. You tried to get his attention, and I appreciate it. Thanks!

The interesting thing about a bird's system is that they need to maintain lightness of weight for flight, so they process what they ingest very quickly, passing frequently. Hummers digest food in a matter of minutes. Birds have a vent (or cloaca) that passes both urine and feces. So what you are seeing is probably a bit of both, pee and poo.

bob, is the land you are working on open to the public?
I've been itching to visit another native garden in my area - I'm located a bit west of you - right on the other side of the tappanzee bridge.

Bubble, of course you can visit. I'm hesitant to blanketly say it is "open to the public" at all times because I sometimes chase off people that act irresponsibly or illegally but law-abiding, well-intentioned visitors are welcome. Please don't visit after dark (except to attend a church function). I'll send you an email with the address.
