Plant riddle (kind of)

In a disturbed woodlands I found several small plants that look like they might be a type of rue. Nine leaves - 3 groups of 3 - on each stem. The roots were quite fleshy. Could it be a rue or what else might it be? TIA

RE: Plant riddle (kind of)

It sounds like it could be early meadow rue (Thalictrum dioicum) or rue anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides). Despite the common names, neither of these plants is related to the herb rue (Ruta) -- they just have leaves that look similar

Here is a link that might be useful: rue anemone
