What is this plant?

I found this spikey dandelion looking plant growing in my back yard. I've enclosed a picture. It's very harsh to touch but looks like maybe a flower of some sort will eventually bloom.

I've seen smaller similar plants but this thing is probably a foot tall and growing.

Any help?

RE: What is this plant?

What you have is a weed species BUT A VERY IMPORTANT weed species. Got any hummingbirds in your area. They enjoy picking the silky tassels of the seeds to line their tiny nests with. If so save the plant.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sonchus
