Wildflower garden: What other plants would you add? :

There's this barron lot near my house I was thinking of "improving" with some wildflowers. I wanted easy to grow (from seed) ones that would do well in a sunny spot. I'm thinking:

asclepias tuberosa

daucus carotas (I know its not native but butterflies LOVE it so)

asclepias syriaca

rudbeckia

echinacea

coreopsis

and?

I wanted something that hummingbirds also might like..... and just some others..... ????????

You might have to do a find for "sewer sludge" on the page but for whats its worth; Sheep who ate cabbage grown on sludge developed lesions on the liver and thyroid glands. Pigs grown on corn treated with sludge had higher levels of cadmium in their tissues. Industrial companies are able to sell or donate their hazardous waste and label it fertilizer. No matter what form fertilizer comes in, it has become a threat to American life. All sewer plants in the U.S. and sewer sludge have been found by government assays to have high levels of mercury. This sewer sludge is used to fertilize fields, which gets into the plants grown from those fields, and the animals that eat the plants, and so on. Avoid using sewer sludge products, they are not safe. They bioaccumulate, increase cancer risks, and potentiate other cancer-causing compounds, and get into drinking water. In soils treated with sewer sludge, although 80% can disappear after one month, "residues were still detectable" 322 days later. The farmers outside Augusta, Ga., say the hay had a musty chemical odor and was dark and mottled. But they fed it to the cows. Then the cows started to waste away, growing so thin that their ribs could be counted through their skin, the dairy farmers say. The cows died by the hundreds. Grandpa would be ashamed of what we use today for fertilizer - I can just hear my Grandfather saying to me, "Son, what in the world were you thinking? You flush it one day and buy it back the next!" Sewer sludge, which was once considered hazardous waste and judged too dangerous to be used on food crops, has been deregulated by the EPA and redefined as an agricultural fertilizer. And fertilizers, as marketable producer are exempt from the laws that govern the disposal of hazardous waste. In effect, the EPA has found a way to make the waste problem that once plagued 15,000 publicly owned sewer plants disappear, at least in name. Each year about 4 million metric tons of municipal sludge-- about half of the total produced annually in the United Stares--are dumped on farm land. That sludge is derived chiefly from human excreta and from the water wastes of 130,000 industrial plants. Typically, municipal sewer sludge contains PCBS, dangerous pesticides such as chlordane, chlorinated compounds such as dioxin, heavy metals such as arsenic and lead, viruses such as Hepatitis A, eggs of parasitic worms, etc. Cornell University's Toxic Chemical Laboratory recently tested SO municipal sludges and found that two-thirds contained asbestos. "You test it and you find so much--dioxin, PCBS, DDT, asbestos --- it's an endless list," says Cornell toxicologist Donald Lisk. ?Urban sewer sludge is a huge problem." Would you eat pesticides or heavy metals, even in the tiny quantities allowed" in food? Would you allow yourself to be irradiated? Swim in sewer sludge, or touch it or breathe it? Would you permit yourself to be the experiment in a genetic modification test? Would you find it very healthy to be confined and injected with antibiotics? Would you eat or put baked human poop in your food? Or even near it? Insight has reported a rash of cases across the country alleging illnesses, and even deaths, after exposure to low-grade, misapplied sludge (see "Toxic Waste Used as Fertilizer?", April 21). A Maryland-based waste-management company, Bio-Gro Inc., a subsidiary of Waste Management Inc., or WMI, frequently has been accused of abusive land application of sludge. At press time, WMI an-nounced a $200 million agreement to sell its beleaguered Bio-Gro division to Synagro Technologies Inc., which specializes in "organic residuals management." The companies issued disclaimers indicating that the actual value of Bio-Gro's sale could be affected by "pending or threatened litigation," governmental "inquiries and investigation" or "changes in government regulation. The study says that sewage sludge, the mud-like material that remains after treatment of the wastes that flow into local sewage treatment plants, may cause illnesses when it is used to fertilize gardens, golf courses and farms in the U.S. The NAS panel determined that the millions of tons of sludge used in the U.S. annually might contain chemicals, which could affect water quality, or particulates, which could wash into ground water or be blown by the wind into homes near farms that use large amounts of sewer sludge. Plutonium releases via the LaboratoryÂs sewer system resulted in the contamination of sewage sludge that was distributed and used widely as soil conditioner in parks, landscaping around public buildings, and in home lawns and gardens. The amount of sludge distributed and the concentration of the radioactivity in the sludge are uncertain Sewer sludge may not have a terribly offending odor considering its source, but the idea of using sewer sludge in a garden repels some people. This may be for good reason, inasmuch as there may be traces of heavy metals, or other toxic substances in sludge. The brand name for sewer sludge from the Milwaukee sewer treatment system, which has been treated and is deemed safe for use in the home landscape, although it should not be used around vegetables or fruiting plants. The fertilizer analysis is 5-2-0. Another target for utilizing our land as a sink rather than a source is the application of sewer sludge on agricultural lands. Throughout Riverside County, industry and the government have promoted the practice of using pathogen-infected human waste mixed with industrial wastes ladened with heavy metals and contaminants as a soil amendment on land surrounding our communities. As a result, residents have been forced to lie inside with windows and doors sealed shut to avoid the stench and the overwhelming illness that accompanies this practice. It isn't always just human waste, now is it? Often we put disinfectants, cleaning products, plumbing chemicals, paint thinner, numerous toxins down the drain. Worst yet, think about what the industrial contribution is. This all leads through the treatment plants and inevitably becomes sewage sludge. These standards are in the process of allowing plutonium contaminated sludge from a superfund site to be used on crop lands Sewer sludge are the solids that remain after sewage treatment. The treated sewage is inoculated with microorganisms and aerated. Then it is filtered, dried, ground, and screened. It is often used as both a soil amendment and a fertilizer on ornamentals and lawns. Note: Sludge is no longer allowed for use in organic crop production due to concerns about heavy metals.

Good idea on the winter sowing. I was stunned with my great results last year at growing all those perennials I could never grow or paid too much for. I even cut a delphinium bloom here in Missouri in November! My seed order should be here any day for winter sowing; however, for direct sowing, I enjoy cosmos and Benary's zinnias for many blooms in mid to late summer. I noticed that this site no longer has the history it used to have. I picked up many good ideas from some of those older posts. Teresa

By no success do you mean the plants died or that seeds did not germinate. Do you want Tennessee native plants or do you just want a colourful meadow? The easiest way is to buy plants, growing from seed is more complicated. Prepare the bed as you would for perennials: remove weeds and grass (search this forum for lasagna method or newspaper method), dig in some compost, cover with 2"-3" of mulch. Then select plants that suit your sun and soil and plant. This is not a good time of year to plant, better to plant when cooler in spring or fall but you can prepare the bed now. Tell us about your soil, soil moisture and how much sun the area gets, what size the bed will be and how tall you want the flowers to get and we may be able to give you more assistance.

Ok! I have a newbie question too! Ok it snows less than an inch. For most people in my little neighborhood the store is in walking distance. That store was jam packed with people getting ready for the "shut in" from the "snow storm" WAY ahead of time. The streets were totally empty that day. BTW, the snow melted the next day. They have an actual storm with possible tornadoes,a torrential down pour and lots of flooded out areas. The makings of a real natural disaster... Nobody even gives it a second thought unless their house actually floods. People were driving around like normal and saying stuff like,"Lots of rain were having..." I'm SO confused!!!PJ

Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) and bee balm (Monarda didyma) are supposed to be good. I have seen one hummingbird at each of them so far since I started having these plants starting last year--I don't have much of a hummingbird garden yet.

Depending on where you are and site specifics your options are endless. It is a good idea to research what historically grew in your area and seek out local ecotype seed , after all, they did evolve and flourish in that specific area. In nature there is a succession of flowers from early spring till fall.typically, shorter plants flower early and progressively taller species follow as the seasons go on. Some of the shorter native grasses are a great addition to any naturalized meadow.
Keep in mind that interseeding may have limited success in areas populated by aggressive and invassive species like tall fescue and sericea lespedeza.Often, site preparation is the key to success. that is a whole other topic.

I have found the following plants the easiest to establish
(forgive the butchered spelling I am trying to learn the latin binomials, but often falter]
lanceleaf coreopsis, coreopsis tinctora, monarda bradburnia ,monarda fistulata,yuccifolium,aster ooblongfolis,aster nova anglae, gray head coneflower,
any of the liatris, any echinacea, any asclepias.
grasses. side oats gramma, prairie drop seed, little blue stem, elliotts bromesedge.

I'm not sure I'd advise adding butterfly weed, if that's what I know as the "butterfly bush," because the things get humongous and are incredibly invasive. They are classified as "noxious weeds" in many areas (illegal to plant them, and the city can make you remove them).

Some of my favorite wildflowers are:

It reseeds itself, but you can cut the blooms and dry them for floral arrangements or to harvest the seeds and plant where desired.
The seedlings are easy to identify and the plants are easy to pull up, if needed. The wine-colored type has reddish-tinged leaves and stems, making it easy to tell them from the green-blossomed ones.

Âyarrow (white, yellow, etc.) - will blossom even if mowed, grows tall if not

Âbee balm (fragrant with red blossoms

Âwild phlox/woodland phlox (very fragrant, white, lavendar, pink)

Like the celosias, these will reseed themselves, but they are fairly easy to pull up if they do it in areas where you don't want them. They can be cut back and will sprout new, lower blossoming branches. Pretty drought-resistant.

These, technically, may not be "wild," but they are both perennials and reseeders. Also the pods are easy to harvest for new plantings.

This will make your garden smell really good and is pretty hardy (it grows like a small bush) and the dried leaves will retain their fragrance for years.

But I echo what Huzzah said. Check out what plants are native to your area. Some real problems have occurred from nonnative (to your region) plants being cultivated and then taking over. An example is the wild morning glory here in the Pacific Northwest. They're pretty and make a nice fence cover, but they choke off everything else and are hydra-like in their resistance to being killed or cut back.

This looks exactly like my perennial red poppies. I guess it's just a case of "Poppies Gone Wild!" ;-D

The flowers kind of fan out a bit at the end, with distinct petal endings, and the leaves are simple, though, not like the leaves in the foreground of that picture. I've been told my flowers are a Hosta variety, but they don't have that typical cluster of leaves at the bottom with flowers at the top of a tall stem. Anyway, these plants come back every year and also make new babies by seed. The seeds are easy to collect too.
This is one of my favorite flowers, but I am not sure of its name.

There's another weed/wildflower in my garden that's really pretty in some of its permutations. I've been calling it a "wild geranium" because the leaves sort of look like geranium leaves. I finally found it on the net and it's actually mallow. Several types, to be specific. The prettiest are the "tree mallow" or "hollyhock mallow," which grow to several feet tall (if tops aren't pinched off) and have relatively large, brightly colored (pink, purple, or 'striped') blossoms. Then there is the "common mallow," which has much smaller, white or pale pink flowers and usually spreads out over the ground.

Pretty sure these are hardy annuals, not perennials, and it's pretty easy to pull up the unwanted young plants in the spring when the ground is moist. I have a friend whose back yard was abundant with the large, colorful varieties, and I found it easy to harvest the seeds. Mallow is also a widely used medicinal plant/herb.

Goodness...can't you guys make your links shorter? LOL!

I wouldn't plant Butterfly Bush (Buddleia). Non-native and invasive. Nor would I plant Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus Carota), it will probably find it's way in anyway. There are other native plants that are more useful to butterflies.

I would plant Asclepius Tuberosa(butterfly weed), and/or Asclepius Incarnata(swamp milkweed). They're larval food for monarch butterflies.

In my opinion, a good subsitute for queen anne's lace is the native Golden Alexander (zizia aurea). While it blooms in the spring, rather than the summer, the blooms are similar to Queen Anne's Lace, and I believe they are in the same family (Zizia Aurea is either in the carrot family or the parsley family--- can't remember which). Anyway, it is a larval food for the black swallowtail catepillar. Just my 2cents on that. Some of my other fav. wildflowers include liatris spp. (grass-like foliage for contrast), asclepias spp. (I'm going to try asclepias purpurascens--- already have a. tuberosa and a. incarnata and the monarchs LOVE my garden), and solidago spp. (good autumn color).

In my garden, nothing beats liatris (all types) and asclepias - butterflies love milkweed.

The cardinal flower is a beauty, but needs constant moisture. Mine grows in a drain ditch by my pole barn, not always running water, but flooded for the day when it rains.

I have butterfly bush, but they like butterfly weed better.

A subsitute but not as pretty for Queen Anne's Lace is carrots. The second year of growth they form seed heads that are a little looser. Cheap way to aquire is if you buy carrots that have the top left on, where it forms a whorl cut this off about an inch below the top stab with toothpicks and place in water. This was an old teacher trick back in the "old days" but if you just plant carrot seeds you have to wait for two years not one. The swallowtails and some of the other butterflies love the stems so don't pick off the little black things.

Sorry I have no idea if carrots are native or not.
