ceanothus a short-lived plant?

After someone on here advised that New Jersey Tea would be a good replacement for barberry I decided to look into it and planted some. I see that some sources state they are short-lived plants and others say that it is more a matter of just making sure you give them the right conditions. What is the experience of people here? How long has your new jersey tea plant lasted?

Since it is a plant that apparently benefits from resprouting after a fire do you think a hard pruning would help its longevity? (obviously not practical to burn it down in the foundation planting :) )
