20 years ago or so, while traveling through the wilds of tennessee and kentucky, i found a native persimmon tree, diospyros virginiana. As it was late fall, the tree was leafless. i found a fallen branch on the ground, still laden with fruit. unlike every other american persimmon i've ever seen, the fruit was very small and very firm, about the size of a marble or a small to medium sized grape. It was also clear, bright, glossy orange. i presume that the tree was of the southern 60-chromosome tetraploid race. since then, i've never been able to locate anything like this either on the web or in the ground. i've always thought that such trees would be perfect for ornamental use. if anyone knows of such trees, please let me know.
