Serviceberry Rainbow

Hello all,

I have a new Serviceberry Rainbow tree bought at Lowes and it is growing quite strange. First it had the aphids and with some Bayer, they are gone. Prior to that and shortly after I got it, it started to show yellow and orange leaves. They look as though fall is here. It has been very hot,dry and humid here in Maine but is this normal? The area gets a few hours of morning sun and afternoon shade. Would I have less issues with a Dogwood?

I've bought serviceberries from a locally owned and operated nursery, particular fruiting varieties via mail-order, and in bulk from the local conservation department. I never had any problems or pests bother with them. Serviceberries are very hardy and fairly pest-free. I would suspect the problem to be the quality of stock and care found in the big-box stores and/or the stress of being planting in the middle of summer. I do not suspect a dogwood would have fared much better in such a situation.

I had five serviceberry trees planted last autumn in my new garden. The trees have been watered regularly but had quite a few yellow leaves. I think the abnormally high heat plus the recent planting has attributed to it.

Hopefully you are keeping your tree watered! Newly planted trees should not be allowed to dry out and should receive regular watering for a year or more.

I have noticed local river birch trees have also shed some leaves during the very hot and long dry spell.

The flowers and fruits of Glenn Form do not differ markedly from those typical of the species, except that the fruits are very sparsely borne. Less than 10% of inflorescences produce any mature fruit, and on those that do, only 2-3 fruits develop per raceme. In each fruit that develops, only 2-4 out of a potential 12 seeds are produced. The reasons for this lack of fertility are not known. Because sparse fruiting has been displayed in mixed plantings of Glenn Form with other seedlings of its species and cultivars of other serviceberry species which bloom at the same time and would provide ample opportunities for cross pollination, this is believed to be a consistent characteristic of this variety. Since fruits of other serviceberry species are taken so rapidly by birds as they ripen, the display of fruit is not considered a significant ornamental characteristic of shadblow serviceberry palnts. Rainbow Pillar is a newer variety of Serviceberry and is said to be more resistent to mildews and other foliage problems that plague Serviceberries. You will get bright orange color on the leaves in the fall as long as the foliage remains on the tree long enough for them to turn color. Many Serviceberries lose 60-70% or their leaves prior to the fall change in color and are not always reliable for this reason. They do enjoy moist soil and I have always found that they do well with some later afternoon shade as well.

Alberta- The last time we had rain here was about 6 weeks ago when that mini tornado hit Massapeaqua. Thankfully not here, just rain. Since then other parts of Long Island not far from us have had rain, sometimes lots of rain. But not here. It is weird how one place gets so much and another closeby gets nothing. I was out after the rain stopped. Sprayed ALL the daylilies and some of my roses with the Neptunes Liquid Seawered Fertilizer. I wanted to do it now that the daylilies get hydrated. Plus it might rain some more which would just wash it in so thats all good. It started raining again while I was spraying. I do this with a no mix hose end sprayer so I drag the hose around the yard. I did it this way when I sprayed for thrips and I always spray my roses like this. Doing the fertilizer is actually easier as I don't have to wear socks and long pants and rubber gloves and be careful while I am spraying. Anyway the neightbors that saw me must have thought I was nuts but I knew when I started I would finished ever if it rained on my. The rain was only light rain anyway. Seems to have stopped again.

Serviceberries around here are fruiting heavily. My older Regent Shrubs have so many fruits now, I just can't believe it. The small Regents have fruit too, but not much of course, since I only put them in last year. So far I have seen the Mockingbird, Robin and Orioles eating the Serviceberries. The fruit is much larger than they were last year, I think because the shrubs had time to mature. The fruit on the small shrubs is much smaller. Anyway, there are no Catbirds here this year so I have been able to eat lots of the fruit myself. Last year the Catbirds just about camped out in the Serviceberry Shrubs and would eat the berries all day long as they ripened. Fruit on the Grandiflora is not ripe yet but I did eat some fruit off the Honeywood Serviceberry. It does taste slightly different from the Regent and not quite as big. I like the Regent better. Really, I think Regents are the best of the shrub Serviceberries and they only grow about 6 feet tall so never get too big. They set an amazing amount of fruit and start at an early age.

Pretty much everything has experienced heat and drought stress where I am. Some plants shed leaves, some sacrifice the outer leaf margins, some let their fruits shrivel. Plants react to survive.

That being said, I tend to avoid buying new plants or doing any transplanting once the weather gets hot. Roots grow best in cool temperatures, and roots need time to get established. I have found that I lose a lot more plants when I plant in hot weather, so I just don't do it anymore.

Ditto the above.
Also, plants from big box stores tend to be heavily root bound. Give it water and mulch it and it will probably survive.
