Hi there! I have collected some wild phlox plants last year and planted them on my property. i see them growing all around my area and wanted some. They are a mix of pink and white flowers. I live in MA. in Zone 5. When i collected the seeds for trade i wanted to find the correct name for them...but now im confused. Is this Phlox Divercata? Thanks! missy

I think the pink one would be phlox paniculata. The white form may just be a variation. "David" is a white form in cultivation.

There are quite a number of native phlox plus many garden cultivars have escaped and now grow wild. A good field guide for your area will help to determine which phlox you have. I hope you did not dig the orignial plants from land that you did not own, that is theft.

Dames Rocket, of course, is a bad boy. Phlox have 5 petaled flowers. DR has 4.

It's very invasive, and crowds out native plants. Luckily, it's easy to pull, and succumbs to Round-Up quite readily. April

My Phlox divaricata is blue. I think some of the common names are Wild phlox, Wild blue phlox, Woodland phlox or Wild Sweet William it is a native in your area. In my area you see it growing in the wild and on hillsides very beautiful and very fragrant.
SOME wild phlox are deer resistent---
| | |
others are not, and I would like to know which are which.....it would appear, since they are proliferating, that divertica is one that the deer do not eat?

Woodland phlox, otherwise known as wild sweet william, is phlox divaricata. Paniculata is the tall garden phlox. Woodland phlox cmes in varying shades from blue to pink to white, and hybride with each other easily. There are "cultivated" selections that are sold under different names, which can lead to further confusion--Sweet Perfume is one, a white variety. Blue Moon is another. There are also other species of woodland and prairie phloxes: Phlox maculata is also sometimes referred to as Wild Sweet William but it is a taller plant than the divaricata. Miss Lingard and Rosalind are maculatas cultivars. It is also a native plant. There are also native prairie phloxes. If you google wild phloxes you can get a lot more information.
