Plant ID help, Please!

Hello,

I have a plant (I believe it might flower at some point or should...) that I started from seed in April/May... The only problem is I have not CLUE what is was anymore... lol. Now it is over 3 feet tall :shock: and I have not seen ONE SINGLE FLOWER/BUD...

Its crazy, it smells sweet but dare you pull off a leaf etc. waaaooooooo it becomes strong and bitter smelling... Really weird.

Here are some photos: I have tried to figure it out on my own but if you do not know the name good luck figuring out what is (since there are a million and one different plants species) and I can not find a really good photo index...

Here it is in all its greatness :lol:

Stalk looks like a lot of little stalks molded together...

Hard to see but the leaves are jagged like lots of little teeth...

Looks to have a vine like root structure... Starts at the left of the photo (brownish color, turns to green as it grows up: I am trying to point at it for you. Like my drawing? LOL ;)

Thank you for your time and consideration. Not knowing what it is, is driving me crazy, and I was suggested to ask here. Sure hope I can find some help. :goodvibes:

Could it possibly be Tagetes erecta?

I think you are right! Thank you! I looked at photos and it surely resembles Tagetes erecta. The I went though all my seeds and found were i think it came from: a "flower garden mix" I looked at the list of what was in the mix and "Tagetes eracta CrackerJack" was second to last. Now since I think that mystery is solved ~ Here is another one...

Why has it not flowered yet? Will this plant come back next year?

Thank you both so much! All the salvageable leaves from the mother plant have produced babies for me but they’re all quite small and I feel like it’s been ages since I got them going. As of now they seem happy, fingers crossed it stays that way. but I honestly wasn’t sure if leaf propagating would even work because I had never seen one of these before, not to mention the mama plant itself, poor thing, was practically melting. I didn’t have much to compare it to initially. Sounds like everyones in agreement on the ID so that’s reassuring! Thanks again!

Thanks Kara! I had originally been thinking exactly the same thing. Sure there are difference but they also have similarities :) I’m glad to hear you’re in agreement! To answer your question, only one of them has flowered for me so far... but they were both in different pots at the time so I’m not entirely sure which of the two it was. I tend to think it was the one in question but I couldn’t say for certain, which isn’t very helpful is it lol. Here’s a pic anyway.

Asparagus fern. Several species go by that name so could be Asparagus densiflorus or Asparagus aethiopicus, And obviously not a fern at all but a popular houseplant!

Just looking around online to see any for sale. I have a feeling this is going to be a tough one to find. Only found one place that lists it for sale but they are out of stock. Yep going to be a tough one. :-(

There could be a few possibilities it is not blooming yet. Did it get a late start? Is it in full sun? I would say it will probably bloom in a few weeks. It is an annual, so it won't be back next year from the original plant. Just save the seeds so you can have plenty for next year. Make sure to start them early for earlier bloom.

Thank you Rhonda! Well, I started it in April/May inside then I let is grow and grow in the same little thing (until end of May) :opps; I think that might of stunted its blooming per say. As for full sun: yes and no... It does get Full sun, but not completely all day... If that makes sense. lol

I am not great with plants and this was my first growing season in our new home, so hopefully next year I will be more knowledgeable about where to plant things (with sun requirements).
