Wildflower seed mix- good or bad?

We are starting to get our rural property in SC ready to build, and although most of it is beautiful hardwoods, the long narrow entry is mostly scruffy pines which will have to be removed for a gravel drive. I'm thinking about preparing the soil and spreading a wildflower seed mix, both for appearance and erosion/weed control. Are these mixtures a good idea? Do they do well w/ minimum care? Once I live there, I'll gradually add some small native trees, but the only 'lawn' will probably be a mower width down each side of the drive.
