Monster helianthus

I got a perennial sunflower (helianthus) from a friend last year. It is more than 9 feet tall already; it's bending in half and is taking the stake down with it! For next year, can it be cut back in early summer to produce a smaller plant?

Yes definitely, I pinch my Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' in June along with other large perennials like Aster and Solidago. This tends to make them shorter and bushier, and does seem to delay bloom time somewhat.

I just got a division of Helianthus maximiliani at plant swap this Spring which is supposed to grow huge and bloom late in the season. I definitely plan to whack it back next year!

Thanks, Terrene. Your new plant sounds like the one I have. It must be 9 feet tall now, and the first bloom is only thinking about opening!

I haven't been visiting GW much this past year because of personal reasons, but popped in today and was delighted to see your bog garden pics. I remember the earlier postings and you've come a long way. Great job! As someone else said, plants in this kind of setting grow fast!! So expect to have to remove, cut back, split, give away, etc. the plantings quite a bit as time goes by. About your pathway, my suggestion would be to use the one chair you have near the entrance of the path (actually partially on the path - feet on the path where it is dry - and put something with some weight on the opposite side. One idea would be to dig in (a bit) the rock you found (dugout) into the grass area to the side front of the mulch path. Just curve in the bog bed right up to into the mulch path at that point, letting the rock protrude just a bit into the mulch to tie things together and still leave the path usuable. Then add behind and somewhat to the side what I call a "stop and look at me plant", a small sedge like Carex Bowles Golden would be perfect, giving some height and brilliant color, and lastly add a small rustic sign BOG GARDEN or WELCOME, or whatever you like or find to the combo.

UPDATE: Last season TR made us aware of this wonderful helianthus and so I picked up a few of these plants this year. He later commented in another thread that SD has grown very large for him. Well given my limited space I was concerned but corresponding with the 'developer' of this perennial he did say that it can be successfully cut back significantly in June to get a much more reduced overall size (with of course blooms occurring much later). I am thinking that this particular specimen in my garden is a bit what he is describing. It is now coming into bloom at about 2 feet in height. It isnt a problem that it is flowering so late as I need more Autumn color.

And so do I! I planted sunflowers for the first time this past spring. I just bought seed packets everywhere I saw them , so had sunflowers from 12" to 12', lemon, orange, red, and even a couple of black ones! They made the side yard look so bright and cheerful, I'm going to do it again in 2015! I just need to find a way to keep the seedheads on the stalks till the birds have had their fill - I ended up cutting some and putting just the heads on a privet hedge next to my driveway. The cardinals went crazy for them - I LOVE SUNFLOWERS!!!

Hi Mcube, I think you got this from me at a swap, sorry to have unleashed this monster on you! Hehe It's a beautiful monster though. Mine is trying to take over the side yard. I have no idea how I'm going to tame it ultimately. I might move a lot of it to a wilder part of the back yard and let it duke it out with the Pokeberry. :) Bill Cullina says you can prune the roots by circling with a spade. Not sure how well that works. As for division, you don't have to dig out the whole clump though, it's easy to dig out divisions to pot up. This is one plant you don't have to wear kids gloves.

I wanted to add - Helianthus seems to be a favorite of critters - which munch on it, and it grows back - so I would think they are well-adapted to this type of pruning.

There are a lot of species that get huge - do you have a picture? Here is a link on Helianthus maximiliani.

I have Swamp Sunflower here (Helianthus angustifolius) and it's absolutely necessary to severely prune them early in the year to control their height...this year I cut them back in June and they still grew huge and flopped over. I think it's all the rain we got here in the east this summer...

Anyone have any experience with pruning Western Sunflower(Helianthus occidentalus)? The literature says that these plants only grow to 2.5 to 3.5 feet. Some of mine are now over 6 feet tall. I was trying to keep this section of plants all in the 2 to 4 ft height range and that is one of the reasons I bought this sunflower. Thanks for any replies.
