My 'Blue Muffin' has a bloom time that coincides with my Viburnum acerifolium and the two pollinate each other and both set fruit. I do think that when different viburnums flower in an individual yard can differ from how it happens elsewhere ... you really just have to strive for something that is POSSIBLE and then see what happens. But if two people agree that Chicago Lustre is a later blooming cultivar for them, that would not be the first one I'd try. We don't know where the original poster lives, and that certainly can affect which cultivars are available and how they perform. For example, I don't think that some cultivars (like Chicago Lustre and Red Feathers) are sold in my area (Georgia) nor are they known for thriving in our heat. For summer fruiting viburnums, the Arrowwood Viburnum clan (Viburnum dentatum) can be an excellent choice. These plants reach 8-12' easily (and they don't grow on to 25-50', no matter how old they get), flower prolifically with white flowers, and set heavy crops of dark blue fruit. Your important consideration will be selecting two differing clones of the species, so that you have adequate cross-pollination opportunities. Check for older threads on this subject, as suggested before. There are several. I'd suggest a couple selections from choices like Red Regal, Cardinal, Indian Summer, Red Feather, and Raspberry Tart for reliable fall color in the reds/oranges range. Another excellent species (highly underused...) is Viburnum cassinoides. There are a handful of fine selections in this species: Buccaneer, Challenger, Defender, Endeavor, Freedom - and maybe more by now. This species has sturdy foliage which generates a range of fall colors with red, burgundy, orange, and yellow highlights. Fruit clusters mature from green through cream, pink, reddish, to blue. Other species likely to perform well in Michigan include Viburnum nudum and Viburnum trilobum, comfortably in the size range you mention. I also really like Viburnum sargentii and Viburnum sieboldii, which can get quite a bit larger. All the fragrant forms are very nice plants, too, but are not often grown for fruit display. Doesn't mean you can't, however. Select a nice Viburnum carlesii, and pair it with Viburnum x juddii or Viburnum x 'Cayuga', and you should have a durable show of reddish fruit that will mature to black by fall. If you gave more information about your site conditions (exposure, soils, moisture, etc.), the list could be tailored more closely to suit. I don't personally think you could go wrong with anything you choose - the genus is THAT good.

Eshore - I have planted a mixed shrub row along our sunny property line also. It's sort of L-shaped since it goes part way across the back also. I used mostly gray dogwoods, and viburnum trilobum, arrowwood and blackhaw viburnums. There's also a variegated red twig dogwood, oakleaf hydrangea, ninebark 'Diablo', purple-leaf sandcherry, serviceberry, American holly, Chinese dogwood, a crabapple, viburnum 'Shasta' and an arctic blue willow. I planted a few smaller shrubs on each side. Some of those are getting crowded out. There are a couple weigela 'Wine and Roses' and a hydrangea 'Annabelle', clethra, two Deutzia 'Nikko', aronia 'Brilliantissima', mahonia, and dwarf nandina. I may be forgetting some. I was hoping that by adding some variegated and purple leaves, it would look less like a place we forgot to mow to the neighbors. I've also been planting perennials and annuals on each side of it for color. It keeps getting bigger and bigger. It sounds like a lot when I write it all down. lol I was on a limited budget also and was able to get some of the shrubs at low cost through our state department of conservation to help me get started and have gotten many things through trades. Be sure to check with your state conservation department, forestry division, or department of natural resources to see if you can order low-cost seedlings. When I first planted my shrubs, I put down several layers of newspaper and then mulch on top of that to keep the weeds out. I mulched the entire length of the shrub row so I wouldn't have to mow in between the new shrubs. I had gotten a free dump truck load of mulch from a tree trimming company so it didn't cost me anything but was very time consuming to spread it all out. It needs to be mulched again. When looking for information on the internet, using the word "hedge" or "hedgerow" may bring up stuff about uniformly clipped single species hedges where the words "shrub row" would be a more natural unclipped look. You can try using "mixed shrub border" or "mixed shrub row" as search words also. How far apart are you spacing your shrubs? That's something I struggled with and still not sure what I would do if I had to start over. It seems some shrubs have gotten bigger than I expected them to and others aren't growing very fast. The gray dogwoods don't need to be pruned. They will get thicker on their own. I don't have any experience with winterberry.

I just haven't been posting on the shrubs or wildlife garden forums because I rarely go here now. These used to be my favorite forums but it seems like not much goes on around here since a bunch of people left gardenweb afew years ago when it changed. I grow roses now so am at the rose forums everyday as I started roses three years ago. I know before I got the shrub areas of my yard done, I was not interested in anything like roses as I wanted a yard to attract backyard songbirds and butterflies. As these areas started to grow in I thought it looked so nice but what I thought I needed was some color for that punch that I didn't have after the azaelas finished blooming. And I have about forty azaelas. So I redid a perrenial garden that wasn't looking like what I wanted into a rose garden. It looks smashing. I spray the roses only with a fungicide, so birds find plenty of bugs here, even on the roses and no birds or bees are harmed here. Butterfly attracting plants like milkweed, purple coneflowers, mexican sunflowers, Joe Pye weeds and so on are still here just like they used to be. And I have lots of fruit here like cherry trees (5), Mulberry tree, lots and lots of Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, red currants, gooseberries which are supposed to be for people but I never net anything so the birds get more than their fair share. I now have house wrens nesting in my backyard for the first time and had chicadees nesting for the past three years. Saw my first rabbit in my yard ever this spring. My yard is very cottage garden as I love a jumble of things.
