Plant IDs. Yes.. I have a number of them. Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I have noticed the wealth of knowledge on this site... so I've decided to take advantage of it. Hope I'm not asking too much. Any help is appreciated. Some of these are seedlings that I planted..... (but don't look like what I thought they were) and others are "weeds" that I let grow.

A and A-1

These are the same shot but there are actually two plants I am unsure of. They both came up on their own. One is a vine that I at first thought was a wild morning glory.... though it never flowered just climbed all over the ground and has seed pod looking things all over it. (try and ignore the cosmo in the background)

The other plant is actually what the mystery vine is climbing on. It has a straight stem with branches sticking out at 60 degree angles from the main stalk. No noticeable flowers. I tried to show a close up in A-1 though it is hard because it is so scraggily. The whole plant is dainty with leaves growing from every part of it.

B - interesting seed pods. Never seen it before. Brief yellow flowers.

C- Thought it might flower but never did. Pretty foliage though. Low growing.

D & E- I originally though D and E were the same. But now that they are bigger they are noticeably different. D has tiny thorns.

F- Some sort of salvia? Very dark purple almost black.

A - mayve a norning glory
A1 Not the same as A looks like a weed
B - a mallow
C dunno
D a tree
E scented leaves? Square stems? Opposite leaves? A mint!
possibly lemon balm ?

B. Perhaps Hibiscus lasiocarpos.
C. Virginia copper leaf ((also called three-seeded mercury)) Acalypha virginica
D. Perhaps a mulberry.
F. a purple cultivar of Salvia splendens

It helps to know where you are located, by the way.

Hi! Thank you everyone who had responded to my post. I had finally found out what plant this is. It is a sansevieria cylindrica. It is one of the weirdest plants I've ever seen. I returned to the store and had asked one of the salespeople what this plant was (Which is what I should've done in the first place...). The salesperson was so nice, she even placed an order for some sansevieria to be delivered the following day. Again, thank you for all of the responses. Everyone had brought up names and photos of plants I have always been curious about and have wanted to buy, but have never known what to call them by way of identification. Sincerely, mbluetyphoon

Great pics of fronts & looks like you have the ID on most. I love ferns, too. I can't help you much as I'm from western WA with different ferns; however, I thought it might be helpful to remember what type of soil the ferns prefer... humus rich with some tolerating dryness once established. Also, fern growth is a mound & those might be a bit too close to the brick wall to mature into their lovely mounds. Some ferns here grow 12" crowns, so need a lot more space that it appears you've given them. Maybe you can go back to the woodland areas of your place to view the mature specimens growth & gather more forest humus for the new plantings. I've moved some of our native ferns from our backyard forest to inside the fenced area for a fuller native garden section. If I get a large enough rootball + the native soil & move them early in the season to get spring rains they thrive. I also mulch with lots of my bagged shredded maple leaves as they would have in the forest, but without the weed seeds :o). Some like licorice fern grow on rotting logs, so you must move the piece of log & it pulls off easily with your hands to set on top of humus rich soil in similar light conditions. If I move them later once we have dry summer weather I have to water them weekly and daily in 90 degree weather if I want them to make it. Maybe you can grow native wildflowers there, too. Ours mostly bloom in spring, so I also plant our native ferns in my mixed beds for contrast. Corrine

Thanks! I planted a lot more ferns and have more pics? Can anyone help identify these? One of them is a log fern but I don't know which one is. Fern 1: Fern 2: I'm pretty sure this is an Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris)Just want a confirmation :) Fern 3: I think this is defiantly a sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis). It looks the least "fern-like" than all the ferns I planted IMHO. Fern 4: I think this is a lady fern (Athyrium felix-femina). It was purchased from Home Depot or Lowes. I forget which. Fern 5: From research I think this is a Japanese Painted fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum). It looks wonderful. I hope it grows in as it only has a few fronds. Fern 6: I know this is a Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). I just thought I would post a few pics of my new clumps. Fern 7: I'm not sure what this is. I love the shiny fronds! It has hairy (not really hair) on its stem (I'm sure it's not really a stem). Fern 8: Not sure what this is either. Fern 9: This is also a no ID fern. It is by far the largest. Very tall. Fern 10: This is a Ebony Spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron). It has grown a little bit since I planted it. Here are a few pics of all the ferns. I can't wait until they grow in next year! Thanks all! 1. What's growing nearby ; ) 2. Thunbergia Erecta 3. Thought it might be COG myself but the throat markings are wrong, i think. I'll say Allamanda Cathartica, probably 'Henderson'. Really more a vine than a shrub but can be pruned into a shrubby mound. 4. Allamanda Shotti-Smaller flowers, shrubbier habit. 5. Agree with John 6. Jatropha i think, euphorbiaceae family 7. Has this flowered? Do you have a picture? 8. Is it fragrant? Looks a little little like H. Arnottianus but the colors seem too vibrant and the leaves don't look right. Where'd you get it? If it came from a big box store in a 6" pot you might want to search the Monrovia or Proven Winners website for an id. 9. & 10. i don't know ixora myself but i'd be suprised if they can be idenified by flower color alone. Maybe someone else can help you out if you know what size the bushes grow to? 11.& 12. Psittacorum Heliconias-sometimes called Parrot Heliconia. The orange one is the common one. Lots of selected color forms, the yellow one could be 'Sassy' or 'Princess Di'. Horribly invasive. 13. Looks like a Stricta, maybe Dwarf Jamaican? Should have a dark red midrib if so. Not too aggressive, at least not in my garden where it gets to less than 2 feet tall and blooms pretty much year round. i've seen it get to 4' tall in some other locations.

I did note my temp zone as you'll notice up top, I am in Atlanta, GA 7b. Though I have not had any of these plants over the winter... so who knows if they will come back. All of them seem to like a lot of sun... the salvia likes some shade.

The Salvia looks like a dark purple form of Salvia splendens.

Follow Up.. again...

A & A1 I realize these shots are a bit tricky. Not a Hibiscus. This plant is only a foot tall or so and is about done growing for the year. I think it is an annual.

B. - Velvetleaf! yes! thanks.

C- is definitely Virginal copper leaf. Thanks!

D- Does look kind of like a mulberry... not sure though. Do they have thorns?

E- Does look minty.. no noticeable scent though.

F- Salvia splendens. Looks like this is correct. Any chance this is not a annual? It is a pretty interesting variation.

Thanks for saying about where you are. Zone alone is not enough as zone 7 could be Long Island, NY or somewhere on the northwest side of the country.

Mulberry does not have thorns, so that would not be it. I'm sorry I missed reading that detail. I never said A was a Hibiscus, that was my guess for B. Does that pink flower looking thing belong to the plant that is unknown for A (not the vine)?

No the pink flower is a cosmo in the BG. A is tricky... sorry there isn't a better photo. That area is awash with plants and it is such a thin plant.

D-looks to me like a vine, not familiar with any thorny vines that look like that though

E-Hairy Galinsoga??

A - possibly Cynanchum laeve, aka honeyvine or climbing milkweed vine. Native to GA, leaves look like that and they make pods similar to milkweed pods. In fact, they are an alternate food source for Monarch butterflies, being in the same family as Asclepias species.

A1 - looks like an Aster to me, similar to the young Aster laterifolius in my garden.

Velvetleaf is non-native and weedy. I pull it when I see it!

Hey, you have alot of the same weeds that I have...

A1 - I agree, with terrene, looks like a weedy aster species to me white woodland aster... I couldn't really see a vine in A.

B is Velvet leaf

C - is a mercury, weedy in my yard

D - I have no idea, but it does look shrubby or tree like..

E - is garlic mustard (with a bit of powdery mildew?)

Compare A with matalea species, maybe M. gonocarpos.

D looks like a very young bramble, maybe blackberry.
