Angie, are the blooms red on the honeysuckle? If so, it is the same. I have the yellow flowering honeysuckle, too, L. flava, which is many moons old, and the hummers love it, too. I just wanted a red one, so I got the 'Blanche Sandman', which is actually more of a deep orange color, supposedly, from dogwooderitternet. He has a lot of hummingbird and butterfly nectar and host plants on eBay. I thought it was strange that they liked the Impatiens, too. I didn't buy it with that in mind at all, but it was a big bonus! LOL I tried to grow S. darcyi from seed this year, but failed. I think because we had such a weird, cold spring. I grew the Flame Acanthus from seed this year. If you like it, you could maybe ask for seeds. Supposedly, it reseeds a lot. Mine didn't bloom this year, but got about 18-24" tall. It is perennial here in OKC, so I am hoping I can get blooms next year. It is also a host plant for the Texan Crescent butterfly. I don't know if Georgia is in its range or not, but it is a cute, pretty little butterfly. Bigger than most of the crescents. I also grow other Salvias that the hummers like - 'Lady in Red', 'Black and Blue', 'Forest Fire', 'Cherry Queen', and 'Hot Lips' (bicolor red and white). But their favorite this year was the Dwarf Red Porterweed, and the Cloudless, Monarchs, and Gulf Frits adored it, too. Susan

No, coral honeysuckle does not have a fragrance. The Japanese variety is the one with the fragrance but they are so invasive, they just about everywhere I look. There are hybrids however like 'goldflame' that smell and are sterile so it wont spread around. I believe mail order natives has them for like 6 bucks.

I have a huge coral honeysuckle (in full Florida sun) and even though it isn't in a container, I do grow several things in pots. Maybe some of these suggestions will help. First of all, most vines have a slow first year so if you've just planted it I wouldn't expect much until next year. Then it should really take off. (First year it sleeps, second year it creeps, third year it leaps!) Use a little bit of ant killer on the soil surface to get rid of the ants. You'll only need a teaspoon or two so just ask a neighbor for a little rather than buy a whole bag. If you can, work some water retention crystals into the soil. In hot Central Florida they are a wonderful addition to container gardening and I'm betting in dry San Antonio you need them. Mulch the top of the pot as deeply as you can. This will shade the roots and also help retain moisture. Don't feed the vine again until fall. Next year, start using a bloom booster fertilizer mix. Good luck!

THANK YOU!!! I've been blasting them with the hose, it does seem to work, but I need to do it daily. If I knew where to get any ladybugs I would, but I don't need a gallon of them, like I have found on the internet. I'm waiting for my hummingbirds to come back, I've heard that they eat them, as well. I've been on the lookout everywhere I go for a ladybug, even have a little container to put it in!!! Christy :)
