What is this? These are not grapes!

Three years ago I purchased three grapevines and they are not producing grapes but instead are producing a funny looking prickly round object. Does anyone know what it could be?

Could be Wild Cucumber (single seedpods) or Bur Cucumber (cluster seedpods). Both are considered to be weeds.

What reputable nursery could make that horrible mistake?

It is possible that you do have grapes that require another variety for a pollination. Without pollination, the grape blossom will not develop, but may turn into a rudimentary stem with tiny stems having tiny bulb ends where the grapes would be.

Another possibility is that your vines are blooming too early for your season, and the blossoms are being killed by late frost/freeze.

I would leave it in the ground. All plants do better when planted in the ground. Grapes do take awhile to adjust and 1 season is not enough. Its starting to look more and more like rust. I would NOT take off the bad leaves( they will dropt) but I would spray it with fungicide. Actually it is good it dropped its small clusters of grapes the plant is to small yet. Keep watering it and don't get those leaves wet(no sprinklers I hope) Grapes like dirty dry leaves. Keep an eye on it, give it more water and no fert. Grapes can take some patience. Then in the fall, if you insist, transplant when dormant.

I am located in Seattle. We planted two grape vines last year and got grapes off of one of them. This year one of them has many leaves turning brown. Any idea what the cause might be and what I can do about it? The leaves are not dry, just discolored. Thanks, Jim

No. You only have the young main cane so far so do no pruning this year. You might plan your support which is usually 2 or 3 lateral wires onto which you can train vines, 2-3 to one side and 2-3 to the opposite side. Next year you should be able to select those laterals and prune all others to 2 buds per vine coming from those laterals. The height of the lateral lines may vary but you might try 30", 50" and 70" from the ground.
