Is this trumpet vine the native North American Campsis radicans or the Chinese Campsis grandiflora?

I second that, catalpa. Locusts have small compound leaves.

As for the trumpet vine, I never can tell which is which.

I agree that the first is certainly Catalpa. You are supposed to be able to tell the difference between the native Catalpa bignonioides and C. speciosa by pod length. Both are in your area. C. bignonioides pods should be ~10" long. C. speciosa should be ~14" long. Unfortunately, the non-native C. ovata is also in your area. It is distinguished from the native Catalpas by being hairless under leafs.

Are you looking for honeylocust? I have one growing close to the house. I love it, because it attracts many insects which in turn attract an amazing assortment of warblers.

Yes, I'm kind of half-heartedly looking for honey locust. I'm told it is a common tree in street planting. If one was nearby, I could harvest a bunch of pods.

I read a book about it recently, and I hear it is sat tolerant.
