Viola hastata - Halberd-leaved Violet

As you have heard before, damper is relative...and the more barren areas it grows in nature, have good drainage, usually a slope. And....damp in Arkansas or Oklahoma is a lot different than damp in the NE. I'd suggest well-drained in your area.

It must be a mountain laurel, then, because years ago I dug way down trying to pull it out and never did find the end of the tap root! There are 3 of these in a row, and the one I tried to dig up is too close to the garage. I finally went out and smelled the leaves of the other mystery plant. I didn't smell anything in particular, just a typical leaf-y smell that sort of reminded me of a pepper plant. I noticed the leaves had a fuzzy texture. Do you think it'll survive if I dig it out and move it toward the back of the bed? It's already too tall where it is, and if it's a eupatorium it sounds like it may get even taller!

Might be a good question for the Garden Clinic forum, btw. I thought I would mention that one plant I have with similar symptoms is Pediomelum tenuiflorum, slimflower scurfpea. It's pretty tiny, surrounded by grasses and not getting much sunlight. Curiously, I have slender mountain mint about six feet away from it and it is flourishing this year, no sign of trouble. Both were planted in spring 2014 from seed. The slender mountain mint is a great plant. I like to think that it's attracting beneficial insects and maybe helping to keep aphids down on the milkweeds planted nearby, but I've got no real proof of that. It really buzzes with activity when it's in flower.
