Pluchea odorata

I have identified some plants in a ditch near my workplace as Pluchea odorata (camphor weed). They are blooming and quite lovely, but unfortunately they are growing in a spot that has been irregularly sprayed with herbicide in the past, so I am considering digging one or two up to take home, but I don't know anything really about this plant, other than that it needs to be in a moist area. I was hoping someone here might know something about these and advise me on any special care I should take in transplanting, or if I should even try. Thanks.

I found this thread while doing a search. I'm wondering about this plant. I received one plant at a swap and the other I dug up...I believe they are both Pluchea Odorata. Info in a field guide and on one site says that it's an annual. Yet these plants survived a cold winter in 8A Texas, bloomed this year and they're still going. Wonder if it could sometimes be a perennial.

Well, it looks like I was wrong on the woody stem description, and Parker was right on the genus. The best match is Pluchea baccharis, which grows along the northern Louisiana border, but has never been collected in Arkansas. When I did the crush-leaf-and-smell test in the field, I guess I should have crushed a larger leaf ;-).

Thank you, Carol23_gw, that seems a likely ID. From what I'm reading it's an annual. Would you know anything more about its growth habits? I'm partial to let it propagate since it would appear not to be invasive.

It's an interesting plant. There are 3 different variations. Pluchea odorata/marsh fleabane, Pluchea odorata odorata/sweetscent, and Pluchea odorata succulenta/saltmarsh fleabane. I wonder which variation your specimen is? I couldn't find any online info about how to key them, but I'm sure Weakley's flora would have it. http://herbarium.unc.edu/flora.htm

I wouldnt call it a sweet smell, but if you crush a leaf, the odor will be unforgettable - very pungent.

P. odorata is a facultative wetland plant. I've only seen it growing in wetland conditions, most often slightly brackish water (near the coast). If you plant it, keep it's feet wet! Good luck.
