Small Native Conifers

Hi, I am looking for small version of conifers native to the southeast to plant in front of my one-story house and as a focal point in a small bed. Arborvitae occidentalis seems to have some possibilities. Any other ideas? I love pines, but at my local nursery, they seem to be Japanese, and I'm afraid of the insects that killed a large one in the front yard. Thanks for any suggestions. - Robin

Not sure. Sometimes you can get mutant dwarf versions of various trees. Dwarf Alberta Spruce is commercially available but not sure if that really would count as native in NC.

Do you mean Thuja occidentalis? We have Golden Globe and it's very small, but a gorgeous bright green. There are many cultivars.

I think hemlock, or tsuga canadensis, is native to N.C. and there are quite a few dwarf cultivars.

I'll stop getting technical. Sometimes I assume I know more than I know. Junipers and water don't mix paricularly well if they are splashed on or the soil is always wet (my mom keeps her soil constantly wet in flower gardens)... our soil here is unique as I try to mention in my screen title. It's unlike anything you could imagine. I personally also know that humidity and splashing of water on a Juniper is not a good combination. This person is in Ohio. However Ohio seems to be one of the 'trickiest' states for me to get a grip on. They can grow Lawson Cypress (Gardengal, either species or cutlivar) with perfection and no-where else in the midwest can this be done. So... I made some leaps outside my "normal self." tjsangel, Ignore me! Truly. It's not like I should be this 'technical.' We're all gardeners and we should plant what we like. Oh I don't know (sarcasm), we have a local commercial patting ourselves on the back. It goes something like this: "Where once there was nothing but an empty prairie there is now the thriving city of Shawnee" (or Guthrie or Oklahoma City, it changes from commercial to commercial). Then they go on to list the various buildings, oil industry, commerce, stores, banks etc. The image starts out dull and becomes colorized in bright fake looking crayola colors as the empty prairie fills in with interesting things. There's just something about the words "empty prairie" that really reflects the way people view these 'useless' empty places like that one needing 'something' up there in Utah.

I'm surprised to hear people suggesting pines. I always read that they're one of the worst choices near septic fields. I think I'll stick with Canaan Fir for now as it serves my needs and is the smallest growing of the native firs of eastern USA. speaking of which, Colin, by native, I mean anything in my general region...east coast, hilly appalachia style terrain. I'm in northwest NJ in a rural-suburban wooded area near a lake.
