ID North Michigan pink Centaurea wildflower?

I was driving through rural northern Michigan (in the area of Traverse City) yesterday and saw miles of meadows filled with a wildflower I havenÂt seen before. It was growing wild everywhere and gave a lovely pink haze to the landscape. It would make a great subject for a landscape painting.

I saw one up close at a rest area and realized it was some kind of Centaurea. The color was pink with a slight purple cast. The flower form was just like my garden Centaurea Montana (which is blue), feathery/spiky mum like shape, just a lot smaller, each about an inch. Leaves were grayish green and very narrow, almost Artemisia like. The whole plant was maybe a foot tall.

I didnÂt have a camera with me, unfortunately. I am from Illinois and never saw this flower where I live. Any idea what this could be?
