Where to Find Elderberry?

vinteuil

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum so I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

As a hobbyist watchmaker I use a fair amount of "pith wood" to clean tools and parts. It's a soft wood that I hear comes from the Elderberry shrub. Just a few grams of this stuff can cost $10 from the horological supply shops.

I've heard that Elderberry is practically a weed and grows wild all over the country. What I'm wondering is does anyone know a good place to find some that I could harvest for the pith. It seems like there's enough of it out there that no one would miss it and I wouldn't feel like a sap for buying it at such a high price.

Thanks for any help or leads!
