Gentiana ID please

I grew these from seed received in a trade. The trader said they were Gentiana andrewsii, but going by the descriptions in the Peterson Wildflower Guide, I think they may be Gentiana clausa. The seed originated in NY State. Any thoughts?

Here is a link to a good pic of these plants. Mine are VERY tall, some almost 3' (can be gently bent over for shipping). They have many blooms ready to open, and many have seed pods drying on them as well. I have sent some to my mom that after a cross country trip still held their blooms. Thank you very much, Peter, but that was what I do! I had many nice seedlings and have been very, very careful for them. But then came the winter, where I stored them in the garage in order to avoid frost and too much humidity. Even, I never gave them water the whole winter. And then, in the spring, nothing came back. All my winter sowing was stunted this year and I wasn't able to use hardly any of it. I don't know what the trouble was and it wasn't late start b/c I put mine out the first of February. The beebalm and other perennials I started by wintersowing are still only 1 and a half inches in height. I'm going to just put them in a protected area for over the fall and winter and see if any return next spring. This was my final year for winter sowing. I've never had a good return and this year I did both winter sowing and then also did seed-starts inside the house and the indoor seed-starts were 5x+ larger than the winter sown stuff after only a month. I sowed Bottle Gentian right into the ground but that was this spring so most of the seed will likely lay dormant until next spring because it hasn't been cold stratified yet. I would take a spatula and put your little seedlings right into the ground now and see how much they can get established before winter sets in. Using a spatula and taking up large pieces of your flat of gentian will be the least stressful to the already stressed plants. Really loosen up the soil where you are going to lay the plants and then give the soil a good watering before you lay down the spatulas of seedlings/soil. Wait a day and then water them lightly as needed.

Gentiana clausa -- andrewsii doesn't have tucked-in tips of the petals like that. Your plants really are lovely!

Thank you all. Clausa it is then.

I must say, the Peterson Guide is really great at pointing out differences between similar species. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Thanks again.

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time in the woods and fields across from my parents house. One of my most vivid memories is walking through the fields in the fall and seeing Gentiana andrewsii, fall asters and goldenrod all over the place. Now all those fields and woods are gone. Just lots and lots of houses with green lawns. Very sad.

G. andrewsii & G. clausa are so close they are almost interchangeable. They are both native to NY state. They are both commonly called closed gentian.
The key for my state's flora says:
Corolla lobes shorter than the plaits = G. andrewsii
Corolla lobes longer than the plaits = G. clausa
If you like gentian the real show starts next month when Fringed Gentian blooms. The cobalt blue flowers open up and are exquisite but the plant dies after flowering.

Thanks. Here's what Peterson's says about andrewsii: "The deep blue petals stay closed, joined by and slightly exceeded by a fringed whitish membrane. A very similar species G. clausa, has the petal tips free of the joining membrane."

I did dissect one of the flowers and could not find the above mentioned membrane.
