Barrel shaped fruit

I have a plant in the prairie portion of our farm in SW Missouri that blooms in the early summer. The leaves are large fan shaped, the small yellow flowers are right at the joint between the main stem and there are fruits that resemble barrels. I thought some sort of dock but have searched with no results. Any help appreciated. Jill

Good old fashion VelvetLeaf. As a child I found if you remove the skin the stalk dries like balsa except stronger. Was great for sword fights after it had dried completely

Thanks all for the info. As far as the photos go I am putting them on again and hope this time they show. If not the area is just a dirt patch about 4 feet wide and 100 feet long next to the deck/patio. I had a hard drive failure a few days ago and maybe there is a problem on my formatting after I restored everything. If folks are still having a problem seeing my photos please let me know. Ted, that Pink Flamingo one is a difficult one. The person who was doing seed production for me sent me pictures, they didn't correspond to what it should be, I sent the pictures to Tania. and even she had trouble figuring out what it could be. And I can see why, see her link below and note that several different fruit shapes are possible. I just checked my recent seed offer and I don't see it there for the past 3 years, so apparently I never offered seeds for it. I'd have to do some searching to find the last list she sent me to see what I did get. But I think that might be two years ago now. Carolyn, always interested in Russian varieties, hint, hint, re any trades, and got lots of new Russian ones from Reinhard Kraft in Germany that are being gown out for seeds this summer for my next seed offer, if all goes well. And some other Russian ones as well, and Tania is all excited about the two new ones I have from the Republic of Georgia.Aha, lots of new ones from Andrey in Belarus as well, most not grown out b'c my seed producers had no more room. Sigh. Why my interst in Russian ones? Probably b'c I'm of Swedish heritage and we Swedes were the first to settle parts of Russia. MissSherry, i am always amazed with your knowledge of these things. I was hoping for you when I was looking for the sea slug looking thing on my coneflower a while back, but I think I did figure that one out. Took me hours, but once something gets stuck in my head it's hard to let it go. I did identify a milkweed assassin bug nymph today, but with something like these little barrel things I don't even know the words to search for.

Thanks maifleur and lycopus. These have never been on our farm until this Spring and there are over 15 in one small space. They are not everywhere and after having read about them more suppose I should do something to prevent them getting into our hay fields. Wonder how they got here all of a sudden? We've been on our farm for over 25 years.

Birds and since you farm they can come in with seed or soil imported to your place. One advantage you would have is that in your hay field they grow quickly enough that they should be able to be seen above the hay.

But of course, birds. I'll have to keep a vigilant eye open next Spring. We get to add this to our thistle chopping routine, OH BOY!
