I thought this blog gives great perspective on the importance of planting natives.
My love of wild birds has influenced me to plant mostly native woody trees and shrubs. The milkweeds I planted brought in monarch caterpillars this year.

You guys have me all confused. ... I wish it was a cycad... I really want one of those. My neighbor has one. I've been waiting two years for that thing to produce offsets. Still hasn't happened. I don't think this thing is a cycad. The leaves are very soft. Not hard, like the everyday cycads I've encountered. Soft like day lily leaves. Kinda rubbery-ish too. Like, a jade plant. My husband just told me it was the rhizomes they ate... Any other ideas?

Try Martin's nursery. They are located on rt 322 approximately 5.1 miles west of the interesection of 10 and 322 in Honey Brook. If you would like to see their catalog, send me an email and I'll forward it to you (electronically). Martin's has lots of treasures and the most reasonable prices you'll find in our area. You should also consider attending the plant swaps at Hibernia Park in April and September. If they are native to our area, people generally have plenty to share.

The white fuzzies in the top picture are rabbitfoot clover, Trifolium arvense. The little yellow flowers look like low hop clover, Trifolium campestre. The trifoliate leaf with whitish chevrons is red clover, Trifolium pratense. Great for adding nitrogen to the soil but not a native plant in the bunch.

Hello! I'm new to this site AND this subject...but I want to learn! I have a particular interest in the butterbur plant. I'd like to identify it in my area or cultivate it. I'm finding my way around and I'd like to get acquainted with you guys.
