Thanks T man, I considered that, but the mayapple has 6 lobes, this has 5, and the mayapple is a single stem where as this plant has 4 stems from a central point. And Mayapples come out in the spring and this picture was taken last night...September.

Looks like a common violet with mutated leaves.

I have lots of common violets and blodroot in my gardens and the woods to compare with. This is just too big to be a violet. The blood root is a spring plant and is "toothed" at the end of the leaves rather than smooth as this is.

It's been suggested that it is in a "baby stage" and will look more like an adult plant next year....and be easier to ID then.

I think this might be petasites! it is a relative of coltsfoot
