help selecting native wetland, deer resistant shrubs, perennials

i'm trying to plant some native wet land shrubs and perennials along the side of a pond and stream bank. i've been able to find lots of things to choose from, but some things i've tried were decimated by deer. Thankfully not everything, but that may not last. The deer left Aesclepias incarnata, Clethra alnifolia and Rhododendron viscosum alone so far. i was surprised i lost Lindera benzoin. i'm thinking of trying Fothergilla gardenii and Myrica gale. Any opinions on how deer resistant these might be? Any suggestions for other native wet land plants that would not get taller than 4 feet? i've got a lot of room to try different things but would like to create a low border that won't hide the water garden in the pond. Thanks for your help.
