Sally Casey of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the California Native Plant Society grows them in her backyard nursery (both D. clevelandii and D. hendersonii). This is what I have learned from her: These are native perennials (not bulbs) that go dormant during late spring and reemerge in the fall with the rains. They want sunny exposures and well draining soil, although I've seen them in meadows that were quite clayey. They must be protected from snails/slugs who love to munch their leaves. *Absolutely no summer water*. Sally grows them from seed. First year, 2 leaves (dicots). Each successive year, they grow an additional leaf. They flower in the 6th or 7th year. I tried growing them many years ago, and gave up. If you succeed, please share your story.
