My serviceberry does fine on the north side of my neighbor's black walnut. A pic from last fall... tj

I'll ask the same question as bekcgarden. The Black Walnut tree of my neighbor's I've coped with for years and between the toxic root system and the squirrels it attracts to their property and my own I'd just love to see the hideous thing gone. Since it's not my tree to chop down, I will say the shrubs at the drip line on either side of the fence are not languishing nor in peril it seems yet .... By virtue of the fact that it is menacing, how about a metal sheet barrier driven down in the soil to block the roots from harming vulnerable plants?? Hate that tree!

I have a variety of honeysuckle shrub (can't find a good photo of it while in bloom) but it is extremely close to a walnut. Under the canopy a few feet away but has matured well. I wish I had a photo of it in bloom. It is amazingly covered in bloom and all the neighbors comment on it being so full of bloom with it planted so close to that walnut tree, but it thrives there. Not the shrub you mentioned in your original thread...but...maybe an option? This was actually planted the first year we learned our problem with all our plants dying on our raised flower beds. Juglone being the main issue. I told the nursery staff...give me something that will live under my tree and I will be back next year to pick your brain on my landscape materials. And it's thrived! I haven't tried those under a walnut, but I know from experience that Chamaecyparis, Cryptomeria, Cornus florida, C. kousa, Clerodendron bungei, Choisya ternata, & Eleagnus pungens will thrive in part shade under a black walnut.
