Overripe Aralia spinosa

I collected some seed recently from a plant that I am reasonably sure has to be Aralia spinosa. It is thicket forming, has thorns all over the bark (esp the younger ones), and has many black berries on the redish-purple stalks. The trouble is Aralia spinosa should be single-seeded. When I popped the berries open, there wasn't a single seed but it looked like maybe a seed split into several little pieces. I suppose it's possible each was a seperate seed, I mean I didn't sqeeze them hard or anything, but is it possible that overripe seed would do this?
